The UIL State Executive Committee handed down a major decision on Thursday, denying John Meredith III's eligibility appeal in a tight 3–2 vote. The ruling follows a previous local District 11-6A decision from June, which claimed his January transfer from Euless Trinity to Fort Worth North Crowley was for athletic purposes. Under UIL rules, transferring for athletic advantage is strictly prohibited. The decision means the elite cornerback will not play his senior season at North Crowley.
The eligibility battle started after Trinity head coach Aaron Lineweaver noted on Meredith's athletic forms that he believed the move was for sports reasons. Meredith's mother, Chastity Parks, is a peace officer who recently remarried, which grants a special residency exception under UIL guidelines. Parks stated that the main reason for the move was a difficult 45-minute daily commute to Trinity that caused Meredith to lose sleep and struggle in classes. Parks also noted that Meredith wanted to return to the North Crowley area where his father lived before passing away in 2021.
During the hearing, committee members questioned why the family did not choose schools closer to Burleson or Crowley ISD. Duncanville Athletic Director William Mitchell suggested that those other districts offered better academic ratings. Parks countered that North Crowley is where Meredith grew up and where his childhood friends attend church. SEC Chair Mike Motheral also questioned Meredith about past discipline issues at Trinity. Meredith's attorney, Darren Heitner, strongly objected to the questions and later called the entire hearing corrupt on social media, stating that the family is looking at all legal options.
Meredith is rated a 98 overall prospect by 247Sports and is the number one cornerback in the nation for the class of 2027. And recently committed to the Texas Longhorns over offers from Ohio State and Georgia. Because the ruling only applies to North Crowley, Meredith can still return to Euless Trinity, transfer to a private school, or move out of Texas to play his final year.
The ruling leaves a big question mark for North Crowley as they begin a new era under head coach DeMarcus Harris. Harris took over this offseason after state champion coach Ray Gates left to become an assistant coach at North Texas. Even without Meredith, the Panthers feature a loaded secondary with Arizona State commit Elijajuan Houston and UCLA commit Jerry Outhouse Jr. North Crowley plays next in a tough District 11-6A that features top state programs like Waxahachie and Duncanville.
